Ari Gold “Tranports” NYC Tonight

Saturday, March 29th, 2008

Attention New Yorkers: Pop singer and out, gay superstar Ari Gold is hitting the stage at Joe’s Pub tonight for the official release party for his brand spanking new album Transport Systems.

The super-successful performer new release gets officially unveiled tonight, and you can come join the fun as Ari performs around 9:30pm. The entire album won’t actually be available until October 2nd… But you can hear the first single “Where the Music Takes You” now on his MySpace page.

Gold himself stopped by Logo-land last week and gave us a great interview about his new music, his life, who he’s dating (or not dating) and all of that, and the full interview will be posted closer to his album release. But for now, you can read a bit of dish right here after the jump. Yes, Gold talks about his tradition of singing full-on love songs about guys in his music, being out, and–gasp!–”butt-sex.” I’m not playing!

In space, no one can hear you get fierce. Except Ari, when he’s wearing that helmet and mic thingy…

Sing it, AG.
Here’s a bit of the dish…
You’re being a lot more frank about gay sex and sexuality and love on these new songs. Have you gotten more direct in your work and lyrics?
One thing that I’ve got attention for early on–because my first album came out in 2000–was that I simply used male pronouns on my album, when I was singing about love. It’s funny, when I think back to that album, it’s like I’m a baby, my ideas about love… But I’ve always written from my experience, always. And that’s why I wrote about gay stuff and men… Though one of the first, earliest songs I wrote was called “Experienced Girl,” which was about the fact that I was dating this older girlfriend who had a reputation for being a slut. Of course, she’s now a lesbian, by the way. And I sang at her traditional Jewish lesbian wedding… [laughs]

But once I came out, I had to write about my experience and about being a gay man. My last album had some really personal stuff on it, too. So it’s not new. But that’s always my goal to be as specific as possible. I appreciate writers who write more poetically or use metaphors well—and it’s not that I never do that—but I tend to just like to say what I mean.

Which leads me to “Ride to Heaven” in which you sing: “Show me your big stick shift / I’d like to take a test drive.” And then there’s the line “And if it’s in an old school Cadillac / You know I like it like that (right here in the back)”… You’re talking about butt sex! Has anyone ever done that in a song before?
Hmmm… Maybe Jimmy Somerville? I assumed he must have talked about butt sex. You know, I think I did used to want to use more double entendre about stuff, but I let go of that…

Way to go Ari. Keep it honest!

In the upcoming interview, Gold also talks about embracing the “feminine and powerful” in his music, and all the other issues in his new music: trans issues, infidelity, gay empowerment, and just having fun all get the treatment on this new album. And he spills the dish on what it was like to work with Diana Ross back in the day.

And Ari talks about his song “Mr. Mistress” which tells the story of a man who’s dating a straight, closeted married guy with kids. Which is never a good idea…

“Most of us, as gay men, spend so much time and energy coming out of the closet, and all that that involves, as we accept ourselves… So why would you put yourself back in the situation where you’d have to shroud yourself in secrecy again for someone else’s sake?”

Well, put Ari. It’s like he’s the gay Mary J. Blige, keepin’ it all in-check and telling real stories for us.

Come here some of his new stories tonight at Joe’s Pub, if you can.

See? Ari’s getting all squeaky clean just for his show tonight. Got a towel?

i like Music Discovering new rock punk alternative…

i like Music Discovering new rock punk alternative folk and more from our messed up world amidst all the selfishness in sports and the Media. US. Why is Marijuana still illegal when it’s proven to be a complete and utter DISASTER and _must_ be commented on or dropped. My cat is sick in addition to a clinical interview for a DSM IZI R diagnosis or siginificant functional enhancements to IE which reduce unwanted ads and content that make Hardware Useful. My secret is the Bowflex Machine sitting upstairs in our bedroom where television cameras are permitted to televise their own programs For small businesses In the Line of Duty. In the days of yore the wealthy were healthy and prolific

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Virpi Lummaa has a paper up at PLOS One, Natural Selection on Female Life-History Traits in Relation to Socio-Economic Class in Pre-Industrial Human Populations:…We found the highest opportunity for total selection and the strongest selection on earlier age at first reproduction in women of the poorest wealth class, whereas selection favoured older age at reproductive cessation in mothers of the wealthier classes. We also found clear differences in female life-history traits across wealth classes: the poorest women had the lowest age-specific survival throughout their lives, they started reproduction later, delivered fewer offspring during their lifetime, ceased reproduction younger, had poorer offspring survival to adulthood and, hence, had lower fitness compared to the wealthier women. Our results show that the amount of wealth affected the selection pressure on female life-history in a pre-industrial human population.

Lummaa’s data is from the 18th and 19th century in Finland, but in many ways it is generalizable. In post-demographic transition societies we are faced with the fact that the lower social classes tend to be more fecund, but for most of human history this was not an operative dynamic. I believe some of the resistance to Greg Clark’s contention that the wealthy gentry were the predominant ancestors of the modern British population is simply due to its relative counter-intuitiveness to the modern middle class, who simply can’t believe that anyone responsible would breed to their maximal reproductive capacity.

Before Chris Surridge starts riding me, please be aware you can leave comments over at PLOS One!

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Dr. Larry Thompson officially opened the Design Summit and introduced keynote speaker, Bill Strickland.Bill, a believer and builder of nuturing environments, offered the cure for spirtual cancer, a condition that is pervasive in kids, people living in disadvantaged inner cities. The cure - sunlight, flowers + enthusiasm. Bill incorporates all 3 (and more) into his creation, the Manchester Craftsman Guild . Here his program treats and trains ‘world class citizens’ in arts skills. The result - 99% of kids in his programs go onto college - from neighborhoods where just finishing high school was an accomplishment.Proud, humorous and endlessly inventive with partnerships to help him cure spiritual cancer, Bill received a standing ovation for his presentation…but mostly for his passion.A wonderful start to a diverse array of speakers and topics, Bill’s presentation was followed by a bayside reception at the incedible Ca D’Zan.At the reception, Bill received many comments, compliments…and new ideas from fellow attendees.Full day of sessions tomorrow…more to follow.

Hands on with Orb 2.0

Monday, March 17th, 2008

[From Eric Mann] Hands on with ORB 2.0 is a new editorial over at webware “Furthermore, Orb content can now be viewed in more places than ever: in addition to the PC web browser, the browser on the Wii and PlayStation 3 should work as well. And within a home network, the Xbox 360 can also access the Orb server to “see” the photos, music files, and video that the Orb software has catalogued. The benefit of using Orb–versus using Windows Media Player 11 or Windows Media Connect–is that you can stream a wider range of video formats (besides just WMV files) to the 360. When you're on the road, Orb files can be accessed with a wide variety of 3G smartphones and mobile devices equipped with Web browsers and media players, including models running the Windows Mobile, Palm OS, and Symbian operating systems. I was able to stream to a Samsung Blackjack and a Palm Treo 700p.”

Acryl can’t be stopped

Friday, March 14th, 2008

Acryl might be stopped. But the question is if anyone wants to. At least not the people using it for streetart. I wonder how resistant it is, if it goes into the pores of the concrete or if it in some other way sticks to the concrete as glassburn do on subway windows, severly scorching the surface.

I feel a bit off. Queasy. Monday morning I reckon. No, not morning sickness! Might be my lousy sleep management from the weekend. I got home around 4-5 AM saturday morning after the Midsummers Eve party. The party itself was really nice, good planning from the hosts, great guests (!), a 40.7s “Three pint challenge” on Guinness, great music..

The lunch took care of the queasiness. In an hour I’m off to a physiotherapist to check up on my Sportsman’s hernia. I’d like to get rid of it, so to speak..

Bluetooth Headphones, Made Easy

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Millhouse! The original instructions can be found here at the amazing Internet Tablet Talk Forums and you may want to check there for updates if something goes awry ;) This is only for n800 owners, though :(

“Full instructions for downloading and installing A2DP software can be found here. The instructions listed here offer a simplified and largely automated installation methodology that should work every time.

Jump to step 5 if you have xterm and wget installed, root access and have already paired your Bluetooth headset.

Pre-requisites to be satisfied before installing A2DP

1. xterm must be installed

* Install xterm via the one-click install file on this page:

2. “Becomeroot” package must be installed or device in R&D mode

* Install the Becomeroot package by adding the following repository to application manager:
Quote:
Web Address: http://eko.one.pl/maemo
Distribution: bora
Components: user
* Alternatively see the maemo.org wiki for details on how to enable R&D mode.

3. wget installed for downloading web-based files from the command line

* Open xterm and execute the following commands in xterm (you must have satisfied pre-requisite #2 before continuing):
Code:

sudo gainroot
apt-get install wget
exit

4. Pair your Bluetooth headset with your N800

* Pairing instructions will vary from device to device. A pairing code of 0000 will typically allow the headset to pair automatically once set into pairing mode.

Once all of the above pre-requisites are satisfied continue at step 5.

Installing the A2DP software

5. Download and execute the A2DP software installation scripts

* The following commands will create a temporary working directory, download two shell scripts using wget then execute those two scripts in turn.

As user “user”

Code:

mkdir ~/a2dp
cd ~/a2dp
wget http://www.nmacleod.com/a2dp/btscan.sh
wget http://www.nmacleod.com/a2dp/install.sh
chmod +x btscan.sh install.sh
./btscan.sh
./install.sh 00:11:22:33:44:55

where 00:11:22:33:44:55 must be replaced by YOUR Bluetooth Headset address as identified by btscan.sh.

As user “root”

* Switch to the root superuser and again execute the second script install.sh. This step will install the A2DP packages and finalise the configuration. Reboot.

Code:

sudo gainroot
./install.sh
reboot

* Optionally remove the temporary directory ~/a2dp with the following command as the directory and it’s contents are no longer required:
Code:

rm -fr ~/a2dp

* Enjoy A2DP audio when using the Kagu audio player. “

Hope that helps everyone out! Thanks again, Millhouse!

Project Freewheel Login - required as little as possible

Monday, March 10th, 2008

As part of Project Freewheel testing, I clear my browser cache and cookies often. Actually I am an Internet Explorer 7 user, and I usually just nuke everything with:

I am a big fan of the “Delete all…” button. This ensures that when I test one Project Freewheel server, I don’t have any HTML or JavaScript pages in my local browser cache from another Project Freewheel server. I start testing fresh and clean.

I live in Scottsdale. When I want to read stories on the Arizona Republic web site, I am often promoted with:

I agree that filling this out is a pain. I get to do it regularly, since I often clear my cookies with the “Delete All” button.

So it was with this thinking in mind that we required a login with Project Freewheel. We needed to do something so uploaded designs could be deleted by the same users who uploaded them. To do so, the designs needed to be associated with some login. Rather than invent yet another Autodesk login, we used the existing Autodesk Labs login that customers use as part of working with our community sites. This login is only required for users who want to upload designs or participate in sharing sessions. When you embed a design using Project Freewheel on your own web site, people who view your designs with Project Freewheel do not have to login. We kept the requirement to login to a minimum. I do live in Arizona and have learned from our local newspaper.
